Not my style of movie as I prefer more fast-paced storylines, but after discussing the film with friends and reading some reviews I understand the stylistic choices and the point of certain scenes better.
Comfort film. Waking up at 7AM on the first day of Christmas break and watching this downstairs next to the fireplace. I genuinely never get tired of this movie and I've surely watched it over 30 times.
I was captivated by the story, not knowing where it would culminate. A simple premise which cleverly reflected on the real life events of the time. I found myself thinking about who was in the right here, but lots to think about in that regard. I like the way the movie is filmed, and amazing actors (love Barry Keoghan ofc). Sometimes heartbreaking dialogue ("maybe you never used to be"). Just a very interesting movie.
I adore Studio Ghibli movies: how they capture the beauty in the ordinary and leave you with a sense of feeling comforted. But I felt confused by this movie and was not particularly fond of any of the characters. It didn't feel like the movie had a proper beginning or an end, and several plot points and characters felt rather unexplored. But Joe Hisaishi's music is wonderful as always!
