This movie is gorgeous, consisting of some of my favorite visuals from any Studio Ghibli film ever. Its slice of life nature resonates so warmly with the heart. The themes of nature and belonging are expanded upon past the pop culture idea of “escaping to nature is the answer to all.” Reflecting on one’s life is ultimately the guide to feeling like you belong and this film showcases that nuanced lesson in a very intelligent and thoughtful way.

Really well made, super intriguing subject matter. Poses some intriguing questions about the role our history can play in our cultural identity and brings to light the reality that many cultures face with their histories being erased or stolen and possibly lost forever. The remaining message to me is somewhat hopeful, portraying art as a cultural tool that can hold the power to revive the history we need.

Greatly redeemed by its closing act for me. Many of the plot arcs don’t meet a satisfying conclusion for me. This film’s use of music was also quite interesting. At times, it did feel like it overly relied on the music or the music became too much of an obstruction in the experience of the story and emotions.
