Initially wrote this off as a lazy remake. I have been partly proved wrong.
While the underwater scenes look washed out and badly done (which I don't blame on the VFX teams but the higher ups for the decisions), the casting was phenomenal.
Jonah Hauer-King helps bring depth to Eric and the right amount of schmaltz, Jessica Alexander plays such an exciting Vanessa, and Halle Bailey just knocks it out of the park. I was so hyped whenever she spoke…

I see the potential. I see the steps that were being planned and the direction they were trying to go — they got the outline of what could’ve been a very moving film. Unfortunately it seems to flop every step it tries to take with characters you despise and a connection that is based on poorly directed gratuitous sex scenes.
