Opening conflict was very well done
1st petty gripe - at the end of this scene, mom dresses them down for using too many bullets instead of their knives. Then, seconds later, when told to finish off a dying attacker, the son takes aim and shoots her. Huh?

Having lost both of my parents in the last few years, I have a passing acquaintance with grief. While I internalize a lot, it usually comes out through images. A photo that is randomly fed to me by my iphone will send a pang of grief through my heart. I've always felt Cronenberg's vast intellectual capacity renders much of his work cold in the same way the Egoyan's work does. This film meshes with the idea he wrote in Dead Ringers...."I think there should be beauty pageants for people's insides. Best spleen." The ideas are there, but they fail to draw me in emotionally.
