Immensely complex biographical drama about American novelist Flannery O'Connor, with Maya Hawke giving a compelling performance. Laura Linney is utterly brilliant. The complexity stems from the fact that O’Connor’s short stories are interspersed with her struggle to write the novel while battling lupus. Bleak at times, and it is nonetheless an interesting portrayal of the creative process. Now I want to go and read some of O’Connor’s work and then re-watch the film.
Well-paced and suspenseful without being overly graphic, but chilling to watch. Brought back so many memories of what life was like for women in the 70s. Unfortunately, not a single redeeming male character is portrayed… The misogyny is rampant, and the ineptitude of the courts and police, who kept letting a killer slip through their fingers, is depressing.
