Not taking anything away from Tony Leung, but after watching this film, I can wholeheartedly say that Donnie Yen truly owns the role of Yip Man.
I loved this movie. Indubitably a technical tour de force that mesmerizes with it's stupendous visuals and spellbinding score and sound design. I love the way how it's compelling narrative offers ample food for both bureaucratic and moral standpoints which results in a dramatic, exciting and captivating movie, it shows Christopher nolan's talent for creating an awe-inspiring visual marvel. This film might not resonate with everyone. I think it stands as one of Martin scorsese's boldest endeavors. It refuses to compromise, demanding careful consideration upon initial viewing I'd go so far as to state that the overall ambiance of the movie wasn't precisely what I anticipated. While it initially presents as a somber procedural drama, there's a deeper layer exploring the treatment of minorities and delving into an obscured episode in America's past. This is my top favourite movie of the year so far. Lily Gladstone had an outstanding performance truly, best I've seen this year. She should get the recognition, she deserves it.
