the editing is shit, the pacing is shit, it's incomprehensible, a failed adaptation. paul is never humbled by the fremen's grit and austerity. they're trivialized while the novel's latter half is undercut. the tragedy of paul's savior prophecy and jihadist war are completely lost. in classic novel-to-film fashion, they managed to leave the whole point of the story on the cutting room floor. that being said, i was in awe the entire time. i can't believe this exists. a big-budget…

lots of gilliam in the wide-angle quaid close-ups and cronenbergian prosthetics standing out to me, inspirations honored tastefully, though the glossy plastic pump-it-up aerobics disturbed me most. i didn't love the triumphant end for sparkle, guess i'm pessimistic. would've liked to see a less hopeful final act, one without any space for bloody retribution, one where the substance is embraced as a worthwhile torture in our twisted neotony-fetishizing, perpetual-youth idolizing world.
