certainly compelling, but the "witch" lens was a bit of a miss for me. the documentary alternates between scenes from famous movies, showing women as witches or haunted or maligned or persecuted. it's a constant reminder that this documentary is, indeed, about witches.
the documentary seems to engage with that idea very directly at its outset, but it then becomes wrapped up in a very earnest and important discussion about postpartum psychosis. it feels almost like an entirely different film…
it definitely feels as though there is something almost hypnotic about the pacing of the film. and a lot of that comes from the fact that, despite being based on an actual crime, the film approaches the incident with relative dispassion compared to its dedication to portraying someone who is entirely incidental to the key forces moving the plot along.
there is something really remarkable about this portrayal of crime/violence in which a film seems to have deliberately eschewed lurid…
currently contending with whether i should write a pithy remark, riffing on one of this (ostensible) musical's many nonsensical and excrescent lyrics, or i should candidly enumerate all of my issues with this move (stupid message, stupid songs, bad singing, zero research into the "setting," etc.).
