my overall thoughts:
to get things out of the way, 1) insane acting debut from owen cooper holy shit, and 2) the one-shot, for the most part, never felt overly gimmicky.
i feel a bit conflicted on how i feel about how well this series "shows the how-done-it instead of the who-done-it" of the crime.

great performances! great cinematography! great score! the main idea that will actually stick with me is the extra-textual discussion on the final 5 minutes!
some other thoughts:
-surprised at everyone negatively singling out felicity jones? i thought she held her own and matched the tone of the movie
-definitely felt more like a fable of archetypes and ideas rather than a character study (which is where I’m a little confused about all the TAR comparisons)
-maybe every other relationship other than the one between Laszlo and Van Buren are more interesting to think about?

made me uncomfortable both in the secondhand embarrassment kinda way and also the grossed out kinda way.
agree with some of the criticism that this plays out a bit like a series of vignettes where the premise does a lot of the heavy lifting; and while I like the ending thematically, it does seem a bit disconnected from previously established plot points (e.g. the other people who took the drug/the larger health implications).
but ultimately I did like this movie.…
this is such a solid noir to watch if you can commit to the runtime. i don't think it really says anything new or profound (in general; not just in relation to the book/first movie, neither of which i'm familiar with) but really well told for what it is.
the pacing didn't bother me as much as it does other people. i did start feeling the length of it sometime in the second act but it picked up soon enough…
