A Complete Unknown 2024
For every Logan, there's a The Wolverine. For every 3:10 To Yuma, there's a Dial Of Destiny. And for every Walk The Line, there's an A Complete Unknown - one great film, one that doesn't quite measure up. Bob Dylan is musically almost completely unknown to me, so I was hoping this film would be an entry point into his world and the American folk scene - only to walk out knowing even less about the man, what made him…

Nosferatu 2024
From a witch, to a (sea) madman, to a vengeful Viking, and now a vampire, Robert Eggers continues his journey into the dark corners of humanity with Nosferatu. This macabre gothic tale is drenched in beautifully grotesque visuals, haunting shadows, and an atmosphere so thick it feels like you're under a demonic spell.
While I admired the film's craft, I couldn’t help but nitpick a little... Nicholas Hoult leans too much into the usual "lovable wuss" archetype from most Dracula…

The Brutalist 2024
Surprisingly, I sat through the whole 3-plus hours in one go, captivated by the cinematography and superb acting alone. But - and it’s a painful 'but' - I have to admit, it eventually led to nothing. The journey wasn’t as cathartic as I’d hoped, much like the film itself, which explored themes of failed (American) dreams and broken hopes. In truth, I couldn’t care less about the architecture, whether it was truly "Brutalist" or not (great title, though), and the…

Mufasa: The Lion King 2024
As the Lion King cinematic universe expands, we get a prequel origin story about how Mufasa got his special abilities, learning that "with great power comes great responsibility." Hmm… well, the film is visually stunning, and it was fun to get details I never asked for about some of my childhood favorites. However, I can't stress this enough: while it's perfectly fine to enjoy traditional animated songs and go along for the ride, there’s no need for almost-too-real jungle animals crying and singing. It’s jarring and feels unnatural, to the point where it undermines everything in between. Not to mention, the British accents... eh, no thanks.

The Boy and the Heron 2023
Watching a Miyazaki film is always a joy, though The Boy and the Heron left me feeling less connected to the story and its emotional core. It’s visually stunning, as expected, though the pacing felt slow, and the complexity at times made it harder to stay engaged. While it’s well crafted, it didn’t resonate with me as deeply as his earlier works. Perhaps it’s not the film itself, but rather that I’ve lost a bit of that sense of wonder that once made Miyazaki’s stories so captivating.

Mandy 2018
LSD and METAL collide in this bloody, neon-soaked fever dream of a film that is SupercaliCAGEilisticexpialidocious in the best, most f’d-up way possible. It only took me 6(66) years to push through the first 40-something minutes, but man, was it worth it. The descent into chaos is pure, unhinged fun, and damn, Nick Cage doesn't just star - he becomes the madness itself. What a ride!
