Knight of Cups 2015
The fractured footage, lack of clearly connected plot points, and relegation of dialogue to whispery voice-overs make this film potentially annoying for many viewers. Yet, I find that Malick's distinct style has a powerful way of communicating to me about the deeply philosophical questions he wishes to engage. The anchoring themes from Pilgrim's Progress and the tale of the pearl help join this seemingly disjointed series of wanderings into a cohesive tale of "self," lost and regained. It is not a story, however, that lends itself to narrative reduction. Malick's film must be felt and considered through experience.
