Well-executed, poignant, gets to the heart of teenage cringe without being cliched. You can blame all the evil in this film on the compartmentalization of the suburbs, of the misogyny of Christianity, or on the poisonous powerlessness of being a child. Each interpretation vyes for legitimacy in the film but conceal the thrum of something darker. Acting is great. You can tell it’s based on a book and its understanding of womanhood is somewhat childish but what else can you expect. Love the absurdism and the soundtrack.
Thus movie is insanely racist, not only in the obvious ways but just in the way it treats people of color as set pieces, like parts of a Rube Goldberg machine, more than people. However it is still a good movie. Cinematography is crazy. This movie correctly portrays germans as freaks. Use of shadows is absolutely incredible.
The fact that Germans were allowed to continue speaking their language and having their “culture” after WW2 speaks to the infinite mercy of the Soviet people. This film also reminds me that the Soviet resistance to the Nazis was the bravest, most difficult, and most important endeavor by any people in human history. Superbly executed and deeply shaking. Makes Schindler’s List look like Inglorious Basterds in its unflinching disgust with putting a shine on war.
