if i were to explain metafiction and metanarrative to someone completely unaware of such theme, this movie would be it. if by the third act you think it’s too far-fetched, rewind and rewatch it all over again. a masterclass in screenwriting and adapting.

it’s hard to conceive that this is not rated as a horror movie when everything in it comes straight out of a nightmare; the so-called “original” fairy tales make their appearance throughout this one alongside a full plate for many psychoanalysts to dig in with the help of amazing practical effects.
