Watching this in 2025 is difficult. I was so anxious toward the end, and cried for a quite a while, intermittently.
Radiotelescopes have an hopefulness that I find very beautiful. The glimmering trail of lights along the catwalk and waveguide link to the Arecibo receiver brighten the darkness. The quiet synchronization of the VLA turning at once, enormous power but only for listening.
Some of the effects begin to show their age, but this movie really benefits from the quiet patience it has toward the beginning.
