I don’t think you can really fuck up horror about Christianity — I mean you always have nightmarish nun imagery, they’re like Nazis but without loser-energy. But somehow Arkasha Stevenson (as Russian native speaker, love her name) visually elevates even this immanently impressing material. Plot twists rather predictable, but The Possessed reference and seventy’s zooms and pans redeem any lack of originality.
Also: making childbirth the scariest scene in a movie (twice!) is definitely a statement and, unfortunately, still relevant statement.
