I love Dev Patel and wanted to love this film because writing, directing, producing and starring in a film on this scale is AN ACHIEVEMENT. But —it was either ‘but’ or ‘butter’— I plain didn’t. Patel is perfect for this kind of role, the setting is ideal for this type of film, it’s beautifully shot, it’s full of energy… and yet it lacks propulsion/momentum in oh so many places. There’s a (shorter) version of this film that would work much better: one with a leaner script and less ploddy middle.

La Chimera 2023
There’s a visceral folkloric quality to all of Alice Rohrwacker’s films (or at least the ones I’ve seen). Gentle yet disturbing; magical but real; literal while metaphorical. The result is a film that creates its own language.
Loved: Josh O’Connor’s performance, Isabella Rossellini, the cinematography, balladeer narration, speeding up sections, the final scene where Arthur perhaps gets to lay his chimera to rest.
