The second movie in as many days that I saw about an individual experiencing personality crisis through memory loss (the first being Mulholland Drive). This one is a deeply Charlie Kaufman-coded story (which makes sense, given he is an Executive Producer on this and has co-directed with Duke Johnson in the past). The surreal nature of the film also gives way to some "Lynchian" moments. André Holland is great; it's incredible how grounded he remains through (most of) the picture…

The Substance 2024
The geometric settings and incredible palette choices combine with a dreadful sense of foreboding, an aura of paranoia, and overtones of self-loathing. By the time the outrageous, extensive and genuinely insane conclusion rolls along there's already been such a massive psychic assault that it almost seems like a logical conclusion, a visual and external validation of and counterpart to the horrors that have already been unleashed on us. A singular achievement.

Dirty Harry 1971
I forgot how much meandering around the mean city streets of San Fran there was back in the day here. Really did not anticipate how much Clint is just walking around violating procedure and rights. Nor how damn cool he looks in those little square shades of his. Beautifully shot in close up, mid range, long shot, and also .44 scope. Brilliant.
