  It has enough parts that are genuinely expressive it makes you wonder how the whole of it is so weak, so generic. The soundtrack does a lot.

  Way better than it has any right to be. The plot is a packet of tropes, it doesn't yet know orientalism is a problem, the characters are wooden and instantly forgettable. But there is so much to love.

  It distills so many aspects of the adventure story. It reaches back to their roots, obviously the Arabian nights, with hints of the Odyssey, while you can see exactly where Spielberg and Lucas mined it for parts. I'm thinking especially of Return…
