As a fan of the game franchise, I was skeptical when this was announced and especially of the cast.
Finally watched it, long enough removed from this initial bias, only to fully confirm my doubts.
Holland presents too juvenile, too naive, too bland, and does absolutely nothing to distinguish Drake's character or elevate this story. It is a forgetable middling entry in the annals of action mediocrity, a waste of a great IP that could flourish in the hands of someone that cared beyond a cash-in, and retrograde to the strides that video-game inspired films have clawed for in recent years.
Eh, fairly run-of-the-mill. For a 90-minute run time, it had trouble keeping my attention well enough to finish in a single watch session.
I actually enjoyed Wesley Snipes's performance and fairly well balanced energy. Viggo Mortensen was a highlight as well, but his role as the secondary antagonist ultimately couldn't compensate for the absolute cliche dud of a character that was Dennis Hopper's role as the primary villain. And no, it's not just a perception of poor performance relative to Hopper's customary high-profile maniacal typecast - it's just plain dull - and keeps Boiling Point from ever being more than a tepid simmer.
The first half is promising. Then it's like they stopped, hired someone who wanted to intentionally tank the movie, and taped on as the second half of the film. Complete 180° directly into garbage...
