Amazon is marketing this as “The Original Mr. Gray” which I thought was tacky but his name really is Mr. Gray. I haven’t seen the 50 Shades franchise but it seems likely this movie is much more subversive on the subjects of gender roles and self-realization.
The heightened production design reminded me of Edward Scissorhands and The Substance.
Camera zooms and natural light photography do in fact make up for a general lack of plot.
I'm not sure Magimel is for me, which made it difficult to track the other characters' maniacal devotion to Dodin. Eugenie also doesn't cook very much after the opening scene, so for a movie without much exposition, the audience is simply told that the two have an indelible gastronomical chemistry.
Really incredible cooking though. The painstaking slowness of the action in the kitchen -- the camera lingering too long on the assembly of oysters, or on the straining of stock…
