The Holdovers 2023
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Something about this film grasped me and never let go. It may have been my nostalgia and personal relationship to concealing but longing for conciliation of a broken, mentally unwell family as a youthful teenager still trying to find his way — or, it could be the experience of wavering between cultivating your own dream within a content profession or exploring and pursuing that dream as a real experience. Either way, the setting, acting, and writing excellently wove both stories together, all while emphasizing the wonderful story and performance of the character played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

Poor Things 2023
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
I loved what pleasantly surprised me about this film. I deeply enjoyed the film’s focus on unexpected themes covering concepts of free will, the undeniable root or inevitable result of evil, and a natural tendency to develop authentic relationships and perceptions of beauty free from the infections of preconceived notions of such bedrock experiences of life — in addition to expected ones emphasizing the unfairness of double standards with which societies almost universally hold women as to sexuality. I just wish the unexpected themes were explored more and the expected ones less in an already lengthy film.

The Killer 2023
The Killer invites one to engage in a genuine experience of what it’s like to be a hired assassin. With that perspective in mind, Fincher masterfully crafts sound editing and tense visuals to create a distinct adrenaline-fueled funnel of thrill from start to finish for each act. The ingenuity of the use of sound cannot be overstated — at the flip of a switch, you’re no longer an audience member within the crosshair; instead you’re inside the mind of The Killer, but click, and you’re back in your seat — it’s fascinating and fun.

Oppenheimer 2023
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
The urgent pace parallels perfectly with the urgency upon which the movie is based. But when the exigency that justified Oppenheimer’s moral choice dissipates, the trinity of the film’s climax emerges: the detonation of the bomb; the legacy of Oppenheimer; and the enduring consequences of Los Alamos. Even more, I hardly wanted the film to end (and can’t wait to rewatch) because I could not turn away from the wonderful acting and stunning visuals , and I desperately needed to…
