Overall it works and was largely entertaining but I can't give it more than three stars for the following reasons:
1) fat Thor played as a joke, multiple times
2) why is there only one funeral at the end, as if only one character made a sacrifice play
3) why the HECK would Steve stay in the past when the movie opened on him talking about MOVING ON

I watched this sometime in 2010-2011, after having read the book it's based on. It's still deeply depressing in some respects, but it's a well-acted and well-done movie exploring how one's circumstances affect one's experiences--and regardless of how those circumstances differ, one may feel trapped under the weight of the present and the past, with no real way to shake it off for the intangible draw of the future.
But it did prompt me to read Mrs Dalloway!
