This film is a mysterious work of art. The classic noir tale follows multiple characters in a place that could be mistaken for Gothem. The anti hero crosses paths with a woman who has lost stability. Keith Carradine slowly turns more and more like the Joker by the end of the movie. Character development is portrayed in different ways. Bad guys becoming good guys, vice versa. If you enjoyed this film you might also like Blue Velvet by David Lynch. Both movies have similar undertones and recurring songs that relate back to the title adding an ominous vibe. Overall definitely worth the watch.
David Lynch never fails to take a simple suburbia setting, mesh it with a twist, and make the whole thing feel like a fever dream (or nightmare.) Lynch is no stranger to the macabre and loves to play with uncertainty and the bizarre. This Lynchian film has aspects of a Russian nesting doll: in the sense of, picture perfect on the outside, but layered with the unimaginable and unexpected. Small town mystery met with a love story, and a crime.
