Written and directed by David Twohy of Pitch Black and Riddick fame, this film about an astronomer discovering alien life, really shows its age.

So meh that meh doesn't do it justice

It's many years since I first saw this film and it's still enjoyable. Described by Samuel L. Jackson as is favourite role (The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, January 14, 2019), some of the special effects are a bit meh by today's standards, but, hey, it's 24 years old!

I have fond memories of seeing the 1976 film at the Capitol Theatre in Melbourne. It had a superstar cast and state-of-the-art effects. This Roland Emmerich production gets the job done without the star-power of the earlier film. It too has state-of-the-art effects and decent dialogue but doesn't seem quite as engaging as the 1976 version.
