Lolita 1997
The film fails to capture the disturbing reality of the relationship. In the book, Dolores is not flirtatious. she’s a normal girl, a dorky tomboy. I feel like, unlike the novel, the movie fails to show how everything he is describing is unreliable. Nabokov makes it clear that Humbert manipulates both Dolores and the reader. the movie leans too heavily into romanticized ambiguity. It downplays Dolores’s trauma literally reflecting the very manipulation the novel warns against. This is not the story Nabokov intended to tell.
