    Disappointing. Pattinson is great. Political commentary so unsubtle that im pretty sure characters were turning to camera, saying my name, and telling me colonialism was bad. Would be a little easier to stomach if the movie didn’t drop its fun themes halfway through for a standard scifi action conclusion that takes 200 years to resolve. Maybe there’s a better movie in here if you shaved away 1/3 of it

I had a lot of fun watching it as a straightforward horror movie that isn't trying to do very much other than tell its source material, but I guess I went in expecting something more. It's visually great and Eggers' historical detail adds a lot, but I felt in previous stuff (like the Witch and the Lighthouse specifically) the obsessive detail and dialogue was serving a purpose, building an unnerving vibe that I don't really feel…

    It's generously unsubtle and sincere. Plot elements (and characters) flutter in and out of existence. Crises pop into the world and then are resolved around 30 seconds later, like they never existed at all. Everything lurches. Scenes lurch from a visually beautiful rooftop kiss scene to terrible extended fly-throughs of architecture student's final year thesis 3D model with GIMP photocopy filter put over it.
