Def not my favourite by him but still devastating. I like how Setsuko Hara’s character is allowed to be a bit meaner and more spiteful than in Ozu’s other films. Maybe this is undone by the surprise moralistic ending but idk

Every character in this movie is so eloquent (“peccant”, “adamantine”?) and has a perfectly articulated monologue or two sitting in them, waiting, which should feel unnatural but most of these monologues were so sharp and impassioned that it didn’t matter.
