Flicking thru the reviews of Anora here I see that most of the bad reviews come from people who came to this film with preconceptions or expectations. It’s to the films credit that these people didn’t get what they expected.
This is a beautiful, complex, surprising, poignant, moving, funny, film. Sure, sometimes it looks through the male gaze but in doing so it also sees Anora’s courage and strength. Mikey Madison’s performance is extraordinary. She shows us Anora’s vulnerability and the tough shell she’s created around her to protect herself, before we see it shatter.
