“Say what you want about Mel Gibson, but the son of a bitch knows story structure.”

Forgot how much movie happens before “the escape”. Also forgot how bloody and absolutely disgusting this is lol. Really well crafted, maybe a bit unforgiving to the viewer. Not that they had any intention to forgive.

It’s no easy task directing a cast of mostly unknowns in a foreign language. Kudos to Mel

No shit, we’re gonna mention Daniel Day-Lewis. The only reason to watch this film, frankly. A tough story, and a tough character, and one of the most brilliant actors ever to grace the screen or stage.

I don’t ever need to watch this again

They approached this from a much fresher angle than I would’ve guessed, and honestly I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected. The lead actors stepped it up, particularly Teyonah Parris, and Coleman Domingo’s work speaks for itself. I just don’t think the concept was fleshed out (lol) enough for me, and the supporting cast performance ranges from meh to downright awful.

It’s hard to assess this movie since there’s nothing quite like it out there. At certain points early on, the slow-trudge pace and clunky, B-slasher dialogue leaves you wondering if it’s going to be a total dud. With no score balancing the sensory stillness of the pace, you’re left immersed in the serene forest landscape, fixated only on the relentless bloodlust of a squelching, monstrous abomination. For better or worse, the choices made here all seem very intentional.

There’s one moment that makes the entire watch worth it, and you’ll know it when you see it. It’s off to the races from there.
