Black comedy that really threw me with the writing and editing. Scenes went from hilarious to devastating in seconds, flip on a dime. The cast is stacked and complemented each other well. The sheriff’s wife stuck out funny though, not sure if it was her makeup or the fact she was Australian.
This movie felt like an experiment in provocation. Funny, horrible, heart warming, but kinda choppy.

A stylish repackaging of horror tropes. Cage was the standout performance. Scared the hell out of me. I found Monroe’s portrayal of Lee so restrained and placid I just wanted to shake her the whole time. Set in Oregon but it might as well have been Ontario for all we care.

The setting was perfect: a Q&A with Willem Dafoe in an archival theatre surrounded by film dorks.
He revealed that most scenes were improvised and direction was often decided on the day. This style of filmmaking required close relationships between actor, director, and cinematographer to keep this thing moving in a productive way.
He also described his responsibility as a seasoned professional working with amateur actors, being sensitive to their inexperience but prudent in guiding a scene to its natural end point.
Overall, his contribution to my understanding of the movie made the experience more enjoyable.
