Hal Hartley’s moment in the sun first occurred at a peculiar moment in the 1990s when everyone thought, yeah, why not have an American film director endlessly quoting Godard, who also knew Sonic Youth and loved a Dutch angle. That moment soon passed (which was bitterly ironic for Godard who was still alive and making movies) but Hartley didn’t stop making archly self aware films either. This film was one of them. Sadly for Hartley, Wes Anderson came along and did this shtick whole lot better.

The Electric State 2025
It’s not like it’s the first time a property was developed from one medium into another where the final product has little to do with the source, but dear lord, the Russo Brothers, or whoever else was responsible for this, just threw out everything that was great about Ståkenhag’s book, and cemented a few select images in a solid cube of shit. What a shame.

There were only a handful of people in the cinema for Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid but no one left during its 3 hours. And holy cow, what a movie. Everything is seen through the prism of Beau’s paranoia, a mind altering experience. It’s part nightmare, comedy, fucked up mother-son psycho drama, delivered with surrealism that’s part Gondry/Carax/Lynch with refs to Aster’s first two films for funsies. Who would’ve imagined a second auteur masterpiece in the same year as Babylon? See it at the movies! It’s a big screen experience.
