a comparative essay, basically, on how much better we have it now, even in End Times. powerful story coupled by gripping performances (cc: vic carmen sonne) & an otherworldly look-feel to Denmark post-WWI, but at the cost of being the bleakest & most tragic film i’ve ever seen by a wide margin.

i was so beyond caught off guard by this film in the best way possible: it’s charming, wholesome, well-scripted, & every performance is delivered like it matters (the summation of powerful direction). it totally captures the essence & fantasy of childhood, & that weird, precocious sensation of feeling like you’re more mature than your years could ever suggest. can’t wait to see what razooli does next.

an achievement simply for its serviceable contribution to the franchise: memorable sequences rife with grappling viz (some of these widescreen shots of the ringed planet were awe-inspiring), high production value, & plenty of xenomorphic induced blood splatter. post-Ripley, these films are still lacking in charismatic, admirably deft characters… someone to latch to like a facehugger would a human head. wanted more from Wallfisch’s score as well; i felt like he settled for retro-strings when sawtooth waves would have been better served. overall, A Fun Time, top 4 Alien feature film.
