The only thing I really enjoyed about this movie was Tom Hardy's rather harried and at times unhinged performance. Apart from that, it was a pretty pedestrian action film that tried to introduce a Thanos level threat that will likely never see the light of day due to the implosion of Sony's anemic attempt at a shared universe. I'm fine with that, because the big bad was pretty, well, dumb.
In a word, Pieces is a film about boobies, a film that could have only existed in a time before such titillation was available within a few clicks of a phone you could carry in your pocket. Back then, we pubescent boys had to sit through films like this to get our cheap thrills in. Nowadays, it serves a different kind of entertainment: a source of unintentional laughs at a crew who tried (and failed) to make a competent giallo…
As much a a requiem for a doomed family as it is a psychological horror, at times I was left wondering how much of it was actually happening, and how much of it was just an externalization of the dioramas that the disintegrating matriarch was making.
Expertly shot and as heartbreaking as it was horrifying. Fearless performances across the board, particularly from Toni Collette (the mother) and Alex Wolff (the older brother).

That's the only way you survive," is the advice given by Dr. Okabe, the army surgeon who's soul has more holes in it than the bodies of the soldiers he treats, to Nurse Nishii, the equally wounded medic, who's attempts to save the lives of Japanese soldiers are met only with sexual violence. A chilling quote, to be sure, but it sums up perfectly their desperate and hopeless romance among the horrors…
