Smile 2 2024
First, Naomi Scott is so gorgeous and talented. But the movie itself was okay. Its ending, too, is very confusing to me: something about the suggestion of mass-psychosis/suicide would seem to evacuate the horror issuing from the intimacy of the demon. And though I understand that the entity was likened to a parasite, and so increasing its presence would be its natural terminus ad quem, I can’t say that I appreciate the almost capitalistic/consumerist thrust the monster randomly assumed. Ultimately, between the first Smile and this latter one there seems to have been a winning out of the productivity of death over its pleasure.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
An interesting, but on the whole unsubtle, amalgam of Call Me By Your Name and Parasite. It aims for the pathos of the former, the politics of the latter and winds up just shy of achieving either. There are, however, more than a few beautiful scenes in this film, accompanied by an impressive score/soundtrack. My favorite remains the moment when Felix’s heat-induced impatience peaks and he sends Oliver away. The sequence was so simple, and the shame it evoked too…
