It's an art film. For what its intent is, they did a good job. It leaves a lot to be interpreted both visually and in terms of meaning. I think that works in its favor. The vintage style footage leaves a lot of grain, that can easily shape itself into whatever your brain can conjure out of the darkness. Whereas this style of film is far from what I would seek out, it still did a great job at what it was trying to do.
The subtlety of this film really satisfied me. That subtlety drops off in the last third, but it also added some real life context that added to the experience. Overall, I loved the movie. I thought the camera work was fantastic, the jumpscares were few in number but quality was there, and it really gave you a sense of terror due to how little we actually knew of what was happening. Also, who doesn't love a Kubrick stare?
This film started very slow. Many callbacks to the original Hell House LLC. But it seemed to milk that for recap purposes. Also, the acting was very questionable in the first half hour of the film. It picked up later, as it was clear that these actors were hired for their "acting scared" abilities. Once the characters entered the hotel, the film wasted no time giving us what we came for.
