  Four (unfortunately not interwoven) Japanese tales of horror feature Japan’s folklore, culture, arts, music, and architecture through a theatrical play of multi-colored lighting and a combination of creaking thudding wood sound effects.

  When does fiction become religion?

  In the Mouth of Madness is the amalgamation of ambitious horror elements—underworld Lovecraftian fiends, Armageddon, epidemic schizophrenic paranoia, violence!

  There’s also plenty of recurring bits that is difficult to set apart from iconic horror films such as the shapeshifting crazed female lead (as in Possession, 1981 that also starred Sam Neill) or the axe hacking (as in Stephen King’s The Shining, 1980) or weird kids (as in Village of the Damned that John Carpenter would…

  When the adaptation outdoes the novel by a mile.

  Jude Law with his charismatic eyes, face and body remains a sensible subject of identity assumption once by Ethan Hawke in Gattaca (1997), and here, by Matt Damon.

  Ripley escaping crime and punishment Dostoevskyan style sans his in-depth mental crises as depicted in the novel could not have went so smoothly. Not only did they make him unscrupulous, they also made him gay. +1★ for the added homoeroticism.
