The trailer gave away most of the plot line that didn’t feel expanded on the movie much. The first scene where there was a dialogue by hypothetical onlookers felt odd. The living in Korea to immigrating West pipeline felt filled with a lot of cliches, but some of them probably are instilled in reality. What surprised me maybe was that the character I liked the least was Nora herself-her emotional tone deafness was annoying to watch. I think to enjoy this movie, you have to not have too many thoughts.
The movie was an overall interesting experience of the use of deadpan humor to deliver a storyline that scratches the surface of Afghan immigrant experience in California. For a movie called Fremont though, you see very little of Fremont, but throughout it is understood the movie has less to do with the place more than it does that the place represents where challenges of the Afghan immigrant experiences occur (those who are familiar with Fremont would already have an idea…
