    Bleak in a very understated way. Also more emotionally rich than I think people will give credit, given how political its premise is. All the women gathered by the funeral demand that Shula weep to express her mourning of uncle Fred. Not as a means to exorcise her supposed grief but to pledge allegiance to custom, as if through collective ritual they can trick themselves into believing he was ever worth missing.     Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell

    Pretty standard doc for a very otherworldly subject, though I wouldn't prefer it any other way. I liked hearing the songs and how over the course of the doc they grasp with greater returns at some sense of the beyond. I found it very kind the way they wrap Russell's love for the stripped-down with the simplicity of his home in Iowa. The story his dad tells about his last words, "Are you sure?", was extremely touching.
