“Conclave” has its moments (Stanley Tucci is quite good), and, overall, the film lands its rug-ripping ending. But the film spends much of its second act spinning its wheels as deep, dark secrets conveniently emerge at just the right time to eliminate contenders. By the time one of sincere and interesting consequence arrives, it’s a well-worn idea.

A Real Pain 2024
“A Real Pain” unfolds like a greatest hits package, as Jesse Eisenberg plays socially awkward & introspective; Kieran Culkien is obnoxiously fragile, and the entire film, while pleasant, unfolds like every other mismatched odd couple on a trip together movie.

You People 2023
Writers Kenya Barris & Jonah Hill have crafted their new movie, “You People,” around a single joke: white person awkwardly stammering into saying something offensive while Black people look on with deep sighs and eyes rolled.
That’s the joke. Over and over. Scene after scene.
It’s lazy and rarely funny, stranding a great cast with nothing to do but serve a limp “Meet the Parents” retread.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial 1982
I’m officially adding Henry Thomas to the list of all-time Oscar snubs; he’s terrific, as are John Williams and Steven Spielberg. Together, they create magic.
