A few moments before Henry learns he's a father, a light bulb flickers ominously then burns out. And I muttered to myself, "now it's dark." Not a line from Eraserhead, obviously, but just one of those surreal Lynchian moments that exists on a continuum across his entire singular filmography. Has any director made a debut with an artistic mission statement as fully formed as this? I've spent this last week in mourning sad that Lynch left a relatively small body of work behind, but maybe when you nail it perfectly on the first try you only need a few masterpieces to leave a mark.

A Real Pain 2024
Second viewing. Still my favorite of 2024. Culkin will win the (deserved) oscar, but Eisenberg is just as good in much less showy, but equally emotional role. So much good dialogue, but it's Culkin's little gulp and Eisenberg's hand on his shoulder at the concentration camp that stuck with me. So many perfectly realized moments. Just a gem of a film.

The Competition 2016
A film about all my fears of the second I leave any room everyone talking about how terrible I am.

Boston Strangler 2023
A Zodiac remake set in Boston complete with David Fincher aping aesthetic and none of its ambition, insight or attention to detail. This film is so paint by numbers you can predict exactly where every scene is going the second it starts. A late night phone call at our protagonist's residence? The other line is, of course, ominous heavy breathing. An unaccompanied visit to a potential suspect's apartment? He's going to creepily ask her to follow him to a back…
