  a striking piece of work, actually cinematic with no need to be showy. shot and costumed beautifully, with performances uniformly complex, but easy. 

  this imaginary portrait of a year-or-so in a real queen’s life feels like a mid-90’s atwood offering. a very internal story of a woman looking to disappear from expectation’s clutches, rather than a succession of costume montages meant to paint the claustrophobia of pomp and circumstance.

  the cast is stacked. the jokes are a million a minute.
  major multi-watch comfort viewing.

  i could’ve taken a big red pen and axed about 23-28 minutes of shivers and quakes. and a solid 5-18 minutes of snivels. 

  it was long and not scary. but beautifully and thoughtfully made. there was a lot to appreciate but i was pretty genuinely bored in the theater.

  wowza. just as good as i could’ve hoped it to be. a major nostalgia bomb, especially in 3d. (omg my first 3d movie ever?)

  i have thoughts, but i loved it a lot.

  grande takes this round. but erivo is a total star in her element, as we knew she would be.

  jonathan bailey is miscast. bowen yang doesn’t mesh with the world they’ve built?
  i didn’t care for the edit of defying gravity, letting the momentum of the song deflate.

  visually (i’m going to say it) sumptuous. the hair, makeup, and costuming are really wondrous.

  can’t wait to see again.
