I have this thing where I wonder if older movies have a higher hurdle to clear with me to be considered good. I need to look at that.
If it is true, this film clears it with room to spare. Great acting, good cinematography. But the script is what really powers this through.
I loved this film. A simple plot and production with a complex undercurrent examination of how violence and war changes people.
Ralph Fiennes did a wonderful job as did the rest of the cast.
Amazing cinematography.

Then don't go to this movie... not for you.
But if you like any of those things above.. then this is a must see.
I absolutely loved it.
The only reason it didn't get 5 out 5 is because of a plot stumble and the miss casting of one of the characters. No spoilers here, so that is all I will say on those points.

There are a lot of places to start a review of a movie like this. For the First Reformed, it could be argued, that any aspect of its creation should be spoken to first. So, I solve this dilemma by starting with the first aspect of the film that blew me away. Cinematography.
The credits show that Alexander Dynan was the cinematographer. But I am very confident that Paul Schrader as the director and writer was responsible for its creativity…
