Surprisingly fun! The Shyamalan-isms 've come to dread managed to create a more engaging experience this time around as compared to the likes of Old. Issues of pacing and tightness of editing keep this from scoring higher, but I wholeheartedly recommend this and an M. Knight plot-twist drinking game.
Quick shout-out to one of the best to ever do it, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom makes this a very good looking film in a year where he shot two other projects with Luca Guadagnino. Busy man!
Watched before the Oscars but logged afterwards. Turns out we were right to be suspicious of the creative team. Their appearances on stage and in front of prese have made it crystal clear their intentions were to use the stories of trans people and Mexican people to further their own careers, putting their fake advocacy (or sheer lack of advocacy at all) on full display. I can't stop you from watching this to be part of the conversation, but be warned: it's bad!
Mikey Madison CARRIES this film when she is allowed to. Don't get me wrong, everyone is doing a wonderful job here. I love every scene she shares with Ivan is really compelling, and Toros contrasts him well while keeping up the energy in his absence. But it just barely makes up for the slower pacing of the second act. I understand why Ani's presence seems to diminish in this part of the movie, but I'm still left wanting a bit…
