    Competent. Workmanlike. Mechanical. (Derogatory).

It's entirely possible to work within the Slasher subgenre and come up with smart, inventive, original films that add something to the canon.

It's easy to forget that, even in the halcyon days of the Slasher, there were dozens and dozens of boring, uninspired, listless entries that sought to exploit It's popularity without any kind of aspiration to higher aesthetic value...and that was fine. In the 70s and 80s, the subgenre itself was fresh and massively…

There's been no shortage of thought-provoking, social commentary horror over the last 12 months that reflects our times. Times when white cishet men are intent on punishing women and any other minority group that has sought emancipation.

    Companion is no different.

It can be summed up by the hateful, murderous misogynistic antagonist uttering, with genuine self-belief, the words "I'm a good guy".

It is also held together with some great performances, notably from Sophie Thatcher, every bit as wonderful here as she is in Yellowjackets. Quaid does Quaid (he plays snivelling pricks really well), Lucas Gage is excellent as Patrick.

You know when a film comes out of nowhere and just blindsides you? That oh so rare movie that taps into your most strongly held beliefs, your utmost desires, or your deepest, darkest fears?

In 2020, Vivarium is that film for me. It might also be for others, given what most of the free world is living through at the moment.

It is an absurd, kafkaesque, surreal nightmare. It deals with the rigours of mundanity, the horror of…

Ever get the feeling you watched a completely different film to everyone else?

Seems Os Perkins' latest has its fans, with others suggesting it sets the bar for 2024 horror. For me, it not so much set the bar as dropped the bar in a cowpat.

    First, the good:

There are approximately 4 minutes of absolutely genre film DYNAMITE in here, and that's Nic Cage's screen time. His absolutely unhinged performance is incredible, both hysterical and visceral, rousing and unsettling,…
