I found Candyman a tricky one to pin down. The undercurrent of white encroachment onto a black community is strong and the visual representation of that is what really hits for me in this film. The horror has a edge of insanity but progressively gets less freaky as you go on. As the film progresses I found myself struggling to see how all the threads tied together and the ending made me think the whole thing was a weird hot mess. I think I'd have to give it a second viewing to see the hype.
Maybe this film has aged, but I had it in my head Blair Witch was gonna be THE scariest thing and for me it fell flat. I found the characters annoying so in the end when they all became paranoid and flighty I didn't feel much for them. The videotape concept was OG in this film as far as I know (things like REC arriving early 2000s) and it did just feel like a load of annoying film students wandering into the woods and getting what they paid for.
Yes! Ugly, twisted, mental love story! If Natural Born Killers had a warm heart it would looks something like this. Over the top and brilliant.
I love this film. It gives me the same vibes as David Lynch if he was making films in contemporary LA. Clean, sharp and mind bending with a hint of comic book fantasy and the hot, sticky dread of a looming dystopia.
