hard for me not to like a film about grief, but boy did this one disappoint. everything feels way too intentional and aware of the camera, even the presumably genuine outbursts of emotions occasionally come off as a bit cringe-worthy. by the end of the film, we still don’t quite know who evelyn was, nor have we learnt much (beyond the surface) about his relationships with individual family members and friends, rendering the grieving trip contextless and weightless.

guess sometimes you gotta film what you gotta film (several scenes are borderline unwatchable) to make people feel visceral rage and care. an extra half star for the real social and legislative changes the film effected. everyone will now refer to hwang dong-hyuk as the guy who made squid game, but he’s always cared.
