Yellow Earth 1984
“Yellow Earth” marked a transformation of Chinese filmmaking, utilizing long wide shots and vivid imagery. While the film does follow similar themes of socialist realism which saw characters that embodied communism, the ending of Yellow earth left a lot to be interpreted.

I highly enjoyed this film because of all the visual imagery and symbolism throughout. There is an emphasis on confined space and selves, and how men like the husband are part of a system that subjugate women. The red lantern symbolizing life is contrasted with the cold and snowy landscape devoid of life.

Seemed like a very high production film with vibrant sets and landscapes. The landscapes and changing of seasons added a dramatic effect to the film on top of the graceful action scenes.

Lots of interesting hand held camera work that helps highlight the vibrant colors and manipulation of time. Not a lot of dialogue throughout the film but lots of aesthetic shots. Pretty basic plot but interesting use of multiple storylines.
