Manhunter flew so The Silence of the Lambs could run and Criminal Minds could walk. Mann understands that the heart of stories about the genius psychopath and criminal profiler is their mutually constitutive relationship—each one not only reacts to, but helps to call into being, the other—and that far more interesting than this relationship itself is the social context from which these types emerge. What culture could produce Hannibal Lecktor, who, locked in a prison cell, ostensibly for life, asks the man who put him there only whether he thinks he is smarter than him? Equally important: why did the spell it Lecktor in this one?

Purple Noon 1960
A French adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripely that keeps almost everything the same (names, locations, plot) except for the deuteragonist’s name, which is now Philippe. Freddy was ok to keep but I guess Dickie was a bridge too far.
Extra half-star for how upsettingly good looking Alain Delon is in this film.

Serial Mom 1994
Incredible comedy. Prescient satire. Think I need to watch every John Waters movie now.
