I came in with no expectations whatsoever, and came away with a transcendental experience. What elevates Die Hard above typical action flicks is McTiernan's masterful subversion of genre expectations. Where most 80s action films would give us an invincible Rambo-like blunt-force weapon hero, McClane is refreshingly vulnerable—bleeding, desperate, and often just barely surviving.
