Corporate modernity as the seat of conspiratorial power. Outstanding film tarnished slightly by the slapstick barfight and the police chase. Pakula and Willis are at their best when the film is at its most languid, not when trying to capture action (other than the brief handheld moment following Carrol's assassination.)

For me, The Substance is most interesting as a 2001 homage. The Activation process directly alludes to the Star Gate sequence, which separates Elisabeth into both a rapidly aging version of herself and a Star Child. Fargeat hammers home the metaphor with a bathroom aping the hotel room beyond 2001's Star Gate, a disaffected Substance helpline voice mimicking Hal, and Also Sprach Zarathustra playing just before the ElisaSue (the dawn of a new evolutionary technology) is revealed on stage.
